What is Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts™ workshop?
Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts is a 2 ½ - 3 ½ hour workshop for any organization or group of people who wish to build and sustain a respectful, inclusive workplace.
What will it help us do?
Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts workshop will help you gain the confidence and skills to speak up when you hear stereotypes or other demeaning comments in the workplace. You will:
Understand the impact of stereotypes and biased statements, even when casually said.
Identify the most common reasons people sit silent in the face of bias and stereotypes.
Enhance skills for speaking up against stereotypes without blame or guilt.
By using these skills, you will also play a part in creating a fairer, more respectful workplace and society.
What skills will I learn by participating in the Ouch! workshop?
You will gain the confidence and skills to speak up when you hear stereotypes or other demeaning comments in the workplace. You will learn six practical, specific skills that can be immediately applied in the workplace (or elsewhere). The six skills are:
1) Assume Good Intent and Explain Impact
2) Ask a Question
3) Interrupt and Redirect
4) Broaden to Universal Human Behavior
5) Make It Individual
6) Say "Ouch!"
Why is this important?
Staying silent in the face of demeaning comments, stereotypes or bias allows these attitude and behaviors to thrive. This undermines our ability to create an inclusive workplace where all employees are welcomed, treated with respect and able to do their best work. Yet, most employees and leaders who want to speak up don't know how. So we say nothing. In Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman captures the consequences of not speaking up: "the simple act of naming a bias as such or objecting to it on the spot establishes a social atmosphere that discourages it: saying nothing serves to condone it."
What is the difference between the 2 ½ hour and 3 ½ hour workshop?
Additional objectives included in the 3 ½ hour workshop that are not included in the
2 ½ hour workshop are to?
Explore how contemporary bias shows up in everyday situations.
Utilize Communication Recovery when things go wrong and you have your foot in your mouth.
The additional content will help you identify stereotypes and bias in the workplace, even when subtle or covert. To be able to intervene effectively, you must first be able to recognize bias in it's various forms.
In addition, you will practice the Six-Step Communication Recovery model for when you are the one who has unintentionally stereotyped or demeaned others. Communication Recovery will allow you to acknowledge your mistake, defuse tension and embarrassment, and regain the trust of your listeners.
How many participants can attend a workshop?
The ideal workshop size is 20 - 30 participants. The maximum number for a workshop is 35. For larger groups, it is recommended that you divide the group and offer multiple sessions. Two Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts workshops can be offered in a single day.
Are Keynote Presentations also available?
Yes, keynote presentations (60 - 90 min) allow you to build awareness and introduce skills within shorter time frames or with larger audiences. Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts keynote presentations are ideal for meetings or conferences in the these areas:
Teamwork
Communication
Diversity and Inclusion
Coaching and Mentoring
Leadership Development
Keynote attendees will be moved and energized --- knowing they can make a difference by speaking up on behalf of respect.
What does "inclusive" mean?
Inclusive Communications means communicating in ways that are most likely to be bias-free and to include -- rather than exclude -- others.
An inclusive workplace is one where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, thereby creating an environment where people can do their best work.
